Maki Hatanaka is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at Sam Houston State University. Her areas of specialization include food and agriculture, governance, sustainability, social movements, and political economy. She studies possibilities for food and agricultural governance to further sustainability, fairness, and justice and her work has been published in numerous journals and edited books, including Science, Food Policy, Journal of Rural Studies, Agriculture and Human Values, World Development, Sociologia Ruralis, The Local Environment, and Sustainability.
Dr. Hatanaka served as a Board Member of the Agriculture, Food & Human Values Society and Secretary/Treasurer of the Research Committee on the Sociology of Agriculture and Food (RC40) of the International Sociological Association (ISA) in the past. She is currently an Executive Board Member of ISA RC40.
Dr. Hatanaka received a Ph.D. in Sociology from Michigan State University.
